There is something to be said for a great sequel. They can be difficult to write, and the print runs are often determined by the sales reports of the first book in the series, so there is a lot of pressure on authors. Yet there is nothing quite like continuing on to that next book in a series you really enjoy. I thought we’d take a look today at the books that have been featured in Unicorn Crate that have sequels out, or have sequels forthcoming soon.

I’d love to start a discussion with this post – what makes a great sequel in your mind? Whether second in a duology, or book two in a trilogy or longer series. What makes you want to read on? Which sequels have been your favorites? And which are you most looking forward to?

Smoke in the Sun (released in June 2018) by Renée Ahdieh is the sequel to Flame in the Mist, which I featured in the very first Unicorn Crate in May 2017. This completes the duology.

All the Wandering Light (released December 2018) by Heather Fawcett is the sequel to Even the Darkest Stars which I featured in the September 2017 Unicorn Crate. This completes the duology.

The Caged Queen (Iskari #2) by Kristen Ciccarelli was released September 2018 and follows The Last Namsara which I featured in the October 2017 Unicorn Crate. The Sky Weaver (Iskari #3) is scheduled to release November 2019.

Evermore (released the last day of 2018) by Sara Holland is the sequel to Everless, which I featured in the January 2018 Unicorn Crate. I believe this completes a duology.

The Everlasting Rose (released March 2019) by Dhonielle Clayton is the sequel to The Belles, which I featured in the February 2018 Unicorn crate.

Those are all the ones that are actually published so far. Then there are several more forthcoming:

Kingsbane (scheduled for release May 21, 2019). The second book in the epic New York Times bestselling Empirium Trilogy. I featured Furyborn in the May 2018 Unicorn Crate.

Wild Savage Stars (scheduled for release August 27, 2019). The second book in the Sweet Black Waves Trilogy. I featured Sweet Black Waves in the June 2018 Unicorn Crate.

Vow of Thieves (scheduled for release August 6, 2019). The sequel to Dance of Thieves, which I featured in the August 2018 Unicorn Crate.

Steel Tide (scheduled for release September 17, 2019). The second in the Seafire Trilogy. I featured Seafire in the September 2018 Unicorn Crate.

Soul of the Sword (scheduled for release June 18, 2019). The second book in the Shadow of the Fox Trilogy. I featured Shadow of the Fox in the October 2018 Unicorn Crate.

Diamond & Dawn (scheduled for release December 3, 2019). The sequel to Amber & Dusk, which I featured Seafire in the December 2018 Unicorn Crate.

I haven’t gotten around to reading all of the ones that are out yet, mostly because my stack of ARCs to be read for planning future crates is always towering. But I’m really excited to get to them. Let’s talk about sequels in the comments below! – Naomi

I want sequels that expand on the world and enhance the story. Show me worldbuilding and character growth. I loved the hell out the 2nd book in the ACOTAR series and the sequel of Daughter of Smoke and Bone. Both books expanded thier worlds and excellent character development. The sequel Im most looking forward to is The Olympian Affair the 2nd in the Cinder Spires series. Incredible steampunk. Best wishes to the author.

My favorite sequel so far this year has been Thw Wicked King!!! It blew me away. I’m looking forward to The Vow of Thieves and Steeltide though! There are still a lot of books from past boxes that I still need to read though, this list is a good reminder of that! Lol
