Greetings, Unicorns! I have some BIG news to announce about some major changes around here. I’ve been thinking about this for quite a while and it is now time to share it… here goes… Starting this fall, Unicorn Crate will be bi-monthly and no longer be available via subscription.

The only way you’ll be able to get boxes is by making one-time purchases (just like many of you already do, or how it’s been with special edition boxes). Crates will be limited, available during a short window of time, and only offered every other month. There’s a few reasons that have led to this new format/schedule. Lemme tell ya why…

1) On switching from 12+ to 6+ boxes per year (6+ because you never know, I might want to do a special edition sometime). I’ve curated 30 boxes since starting this little one-woman business in 2017, and month after month those deadlines seem to feel like they’re rolling around faster, and faster. I’ve been feeling like I’m on a treadmill that won’t let me take a breather this year, or some sort of hamster wheel that will combust if I try to step off for a moment… and now that I also started working another full-time job two months ago it’s time to make a change – to adapt and grow in a new way. As all things must as time flows on.

I’m still extremely passionate about YA books and going part-time with Unicorn Crate has me really excited because I’ll be able to enjoy the process more like I used to, instead of feeling so rushed all the time. And I’ve also found that most people don’t want 12 boxes per year (I live in a tiny space, and I get it, it gets to be a lot!). I’m honestly also excited to be able to make a little time for other things I love, like writing YA fantasy and making botanical alchemy, and not just “working” 24/7 (though I’ll still be working a lot 😄).

2) To subscribe, or not to subscribe, that has always been the question has it not? I know lots of people hesitate whether or not to hit that subscribe button, and often even if they do, they make a last-minute decision to cancel it or skip the month in the days, or even hours, before renewals go through. Some of the giant subscription boxes out there might be able to take that, but I can’t keep taking these huge cancellation hits each month. I purchase the inventory far in advance based on how many people say they’re going to get a box, and when so many people change their mind last-minute, it’s really financially difficult and mentally super stressful for a micro business.

*And to those of you who have been long-time subscribers (some even from the very beginning) I am SO thankful for you. You got me through some very hard times! I cannot even begin to describe how much your support means to me. I am so sorry if this change causes an inconvenience for you. I sincerely hope you will continue to enjoy Unicorn Crate. If you’ve never skipped a box from the very beginning, email me and I’ll send you a special discount code!

I’m hoping this much simpler method will be better for everyone though. If you want a box, it’ll be super straight forward – purchase it during the 10-day window. That’s it. I’ll order just enough to put boxes together for those who have ordered (no cancellations after the 10-day window).

So, August 1st will be the last regularly scheduled renewal date. If you’re currently subscribed (and don’t cancel last-minute) then your spot is safe, and you will be billed for the August box on August 1st. Mid-August I will be processing cancellations for all active subscriptions (if you have boxes left on a pre-paid 3- or 6-month subscription, you will receive a refund for whichever boxes have not yet been sent).

The first bi-monthly box will be for the September box (for which the order-window is opening for 10 days starting tomorrow). The order windows will always be around 6 weeks before the boxes ship.

There won’t be an October box. There WILL be a November box. There won’t be a December box, etc. So, if you want to order a Unicorn Crate for the holidays this year, make sure you order a November one (it’s going to be all kinds of cozy, perfect for the winter holidays). The order window for November will open the last week in September. As far as I know so far, boxes will remain the same price.

Ok, well that is a lot of new info, so I’ll let you all digest that (I’m still digesting all of this, myself). I’m going to lift a glass in cheers to everything that Unicorn Crate has been these past two years, and all that it will continue to be, and more.

    I hope and assume you’ll be sending out an email to say the 10-day window is coming up and the day it opens? I like the subscription method because I don’t have to remember to do anything, I just get super cool books and stuff in the mail every month, but I love your box enough that I would like to continue to get it in this new form. I don’t think I’ve skipped any boxes and certainly hope to not miss any more of them.

      Yes, of course I will still be communicating through these newsletters and social media! Every time there is a theme announcement/new purchase window opening I will most definitely be sending out an email and posting on social. The September theme and window will open tomorrow 🙂

    Hi! I had originally started my subscription last month so I could get the August box but, received an e-mail saying my subscription cancelled. I’m assuming just my subscription was cancelled but, I would still will get the August box? Or does it mean I have to repurchase it?

      Hi! Yes, all subscriptions are cancelled. As mentioned in the announcement, I did this after the August renewals so that it didn’t mess up anyone’s August box. It just means you won’t be auto charged for any other boxes in the future. Starting with the September box, all boxes must be purchased individually. The September purchase window is open now! Only until August. 8th though.
